Information about Holywood Golf Course

The Course

Holywood is an 18 hole undulating parkland course neighbouring Redburn Country Park on the outskirts of Belfast City. The course overlooks the city and Belfast Lough with views that are unrivalled in the area. To score well requires accurate driving as opposed to length and good approach shots are needed to find the greens. You will find the course enjoyable and be amazed by the scenery.

If you enjoy golf in less than 4 hours then Holywood is an ideal course for you. Its length is not challenging and for the average golfer, you will find plenty of opportunity to score well. The front nine holes are ideal for a quick nine holes before or after work, it is a quick and easy walk and allows plenty of room for the golfer to spray it a bit off the tee. There are also three interesting par 3 holes which always help to tighten up your short game in a quick nine holes.

However…..the back nine is laid out on different terrain with elevation changes and will challenge you all the way. It will place emphasis on your adoptability to the terrain and course management decisions to create a good score, but if that fails to materialise you can enjoy the countryside walk and the magnificent views over Belfast Lough.

Holywood has proved over the years that it is an ideal course to improve your short game and shot making skills. It has produced no fewer than five PGA Golf Professionals and one Golfing Superstar in the form of European and world touring professional Rory McIlroy.

Rory states that” Holywood was a great course for me to learn the game on, it has all the traits that develop your game from playing it regularly. It helps you to learn to shape your shots, places emphasis on your short game and creates more versatile and adaptable golf game through the variety of different shots encountered. I have no doubt that the course helped me to become the golfer I am today”.

According to reliable local evidence the first golf played in Ireland was on the shores of Belfast Lough in Holywood. In 1881 The Belfast Club as it was known was formed and was an immediate success. In 1885 this club was granted the favour of H.R.H the prince of Wales to be known as Royal Belfast Golf Club. In 1892 the club moved to newly acquired land near Carnalea and a void was created in the lives of the Holywood golfers.

Therefore Holywood Golf Club was formed and in 1904 they established their first golf course. It was originally a nine hole course and was laid out on ground rented from Henry Harrison on what was and still is known as the Irish Hill. The hill had often been used as a toboggan run and even when the course occupied the upper ground it was still kept open in snowy weather for tobogganing.

Over 100 years later and Holywood Golf Club is moving forward with the sporting world. The club has a relaxed atmosphere and its forward thinking attitude reflects this. The dress code is up to date with modern living and reflects the needs and wants of today’s society therefore smart jeans are acceptable in the clubhouse. There is also a spike bar at the club which you can use in your golf shoes and clothes either half way round or after your game. It shows all the sport on a 42” plasma TV and is a favourite meeting point for golfers.

The club has invested in a 100 yard short game practice area, paths suitable for ride on buggies, drainage projects, restaurant refurbishment & locker room refurbishment in recent times. This investment is set to continue to ensure that Holywood keeps ahead of its market.
